In her newest release Red Sea Road to Sinai; Overcoming Abuse and Trauma with God’s Word, Cate Jones, RN had it all. She grew up in an idyllic New Zealand town, beautiful, healthy, and strong in the care of loving parents. As a young adult she had a promising new career in the Salvation Army and soon married her new husband. But within a few short years, the first signs of an eating disorder surfaced.
Told with candor and aplomb, Cate recounts the labyrinthine nightmare of gaslighting, domestic and sexual abuse that defined much of her marriage.
Amid torturous years of doubt, Cate shares gleaming moments of pure joy: the pregnancy and birth of her daughter, picnics, and joyous times with new friends… and the hope that she could overcome the eating disorder.
Despite leaning into her faith, she felt her eating habits were out of control. So much so, she eventually made plans to take her own life.
As each one failed, she seemed consumed by self-loathing. More than once Cate was relegated to mental care facilities far from her family for months at a time. With real support out of reach, suicide was never far from her mind.
Mental health care professionals concluded that the source of Cate’s troubles was her family of origin, not the doting husband entrusted to love and cherish her. So flawless was her husband’s façade that for years friends and associates never suspected he was the true cause of her mental condition.
While enduring controversial “treatments” and mind-numbing medications, Cate managed to hang onto her faith in God. When she was able at last to see the truth of her situation, she takes bold measures to obtain her healing, starting with the soul numbing protocols she’d taken for decades.
As many abuse survivors have discovered, the longer the abused stays, the deeper the physical toll, the more devastating the emotional trauma, and the higher the cost of leaving. When Cate becomes aware of what it will take to save her sanity, and the staggering cost is nearly too much to bear.
Cate’s courageous move to the United States will inspire abuse survivors. Her unconventional telling of many challenges and trials is liberally sprinkled with passages and verses that sustained her hope and encouraged her toward a new life.
Starting over is never easy; it requires careful planning and sacrifice. But Cate is proof that not only can it be done, it is worth enduring whatever it takes to gain freedom. The remainder of Red Sea Road to Sinai shares Cate’s most astonishing adventure not only with her ever-faithful God, but the love she found along the way.
